    Text4baby Update (Guest Blogger)

As you may have read in last week’s post, I am one of the new mommy-to-be bloggers who will be posting on Calm, Cool & Connected from now through Mother’s Day. I was invited to join the blog for the next few months to share my experience as I prepare to become a mom for the first time. Part of the preparation process is being informed. AT&T just announced its support of the new Text4baby service, so I thought I’d check it out. Text4baby made it easy to sign up: After texting “baby” to 511411 and providing my due date and zip code, the text messages began!  It started, of course, with a welcome message that wished me a happy and healthy pregnancy.  Now I receive a new text message each day with a reminder (take my prenatals, schedule a doctor’s appointment) or advice about my pregnancy (don’t smoke or drink).  The texts also provide links to other resources, like the Center for Disease Control to check on getting a seasonal flu shot or H1N1 vaccination or a number to call to find an OB or nurse practitioner. These texts coincide nicely with the start last Monday of the four Prepared Childbirth classes my husband and I are attending each week at our hospital. Between the messages on my smartphone and the classroom learning, I feel better prepared as I approach this life-changing event. Spending time each day, even briefly, learning and thinking about my soon-to-be son is calming. Work and deciding what’s for dinner can gobble up mindshare rapidly – but a quick focus on what’s growing in my belly helps ground me and balance priorities.

    Nicole Anderson

Nicole AndersonHello, everyone! I’m Nicole, an AT&T employee and soon-to-be-mom of a baby boy. My husband, Justin, and I are expecting our first child at the end of April. It’s been a year of big changes for us, as I relocated with the company last April from the San Francisco Bay Area to Dallas. Thankfully, my husband was able to maintain his career, working remotely from Dallas. I’m jealous he gets to go back to California every month or so, especially during the summer to beat the heat! Just as we started getting settled in Dallas – learning the neighborhood, what road led where, and I was getting up to speed on my new job – we found out we were pregnant! It has been an exciting, if overwhelming, journey for us. Critical during our relocation was the use of our smartphones. If we got lost, or if we needed to find a restaurant, e-mail our realtor or send a quick text, our smartphones didn’t let us down. Now with the text4baby program, I can get quick and informative baby advice sent directly to my phone. With all the hecticness in our work and lives, these texts create a quick moment to reflect on the big change coming in our lives and learn something about the new life we are forming. I look forward to sharing this experience with you through my blog posts, and learning more about how to use technology as a new mom. Is there an app that helps your baby sleep through the night?!

    Theme Parks and Texting

When going on outings with the whole family, like to a theme park, texting can come in handy. Here’s a video where I share some of my tips:

    When Being Connected Matters Most

When most people think of the Fourth of July – especially when it falls on or around a weekend – they think of barbeques, weekend getaways, and fireworks. The same can’t be said for my wife’s family. For them, the Fourth of July usually means a trip to the hospital. It’s not because they’re irresponsible with fireworks or party too hard at a family picnic. It’s a matter of happenstance.

Last year, my mother-in-law slipped a disc in her back, pinching a nerve and causing discomfort that I can’t begin to fathom. This year, it was my wife’s turn. Amy earned herself a 4-day stay at St. John’s Mercy Hospital for a Fourth of July we won’t soon forget.

The week leading up to our nation’s birthday, Amy developed a fever and a nasty habit of going from the chills to overheating. We first took her temperature on Tuesday, and while she did have a fever, it wasn’t high enough to warrant an unscheduled visit to her OB/GYN. Because her department was working through a quarterly rebalance, Amy wouldn’t call in sick to work. Fortunately, her supervisor sent her home earlier than expected on multiple occasions.

The fight between the chills and the sweats continued throughout Wednesday, and on Thursday Amy awoke with a toasty fever of 102°.  I was finally able to convince her to call in sick, and after a call to the doctor later that afternoon when her fever persisted, we were told to proceed to the hospital so they could run some tests and diagnose her.

Hours later, it was determined that the cause of Amy’s discomfort was a bladder infection. Later on that weekend, we found out that her kidneys were also infected. What we thought would be a quick trip for a prescription of antibiotic(s), fluids, and plenty of rest turned into an overnight stay. On Friday, we were told that the common treatment required 48-hours of the antibiotic. Later that evening, we were told that all would be well 24 hours after her fever last broke.  Come Saturday morning, we were told that the doctor wanted to keep her an extra 24 hours to ensure that the infection had run its course.

Come Sunday, we were both mentally and physically exhausted.  Amy spent the weekend with an IV in her arm, connected to a pump that regulated the amount of fluid she would receive and the speed at which it would be delivered. While I almost never left her side, that pump was her BFF (for the weekend).  Amy and Baby B are both doing well and our lives are back to business as usual.

Through all of this, and thanks to Wi-Fi, our wireless phones and a laptop, I was able to let friends know that we wouldn’t be able to make it to the weekend’s festivities using Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail. I kept our family members up to speed and directed visitors to our room with phone calls and text messages. I even took pictures of the flowers Amy received, her new friend the IV pump, and the fireworks we could see from Amy’s room. While enduring a situation that would make any first-time expectant parents nervous, we were able to keep our loved ones in the loop, and put their minds at ease, all the while keeping ourselves abreast of all of the latest news and sports happenings. Our Unlimited Messaging for Families plan got quite the workout that weekend.

We wonder what’s in store for the family come July 4, 2010?

    Read to Me!

I have a new favorite thing I am so excited about. I’m trying out the new Nokia E71x and let me tell you, so far I’m loving it!!! I’m still getting familiar with it, but I have found my favorite thing about it so far. It’s a feature called Message Reader. It will read your text messages to you!!! I remember testing out a technology like this years ago and have always wanted to see this come back around.

Well, here it is and of course it’s really simple. You receive a text message and can either press the key to read it or press and hold the key to have the device begin reading it to you. It will let you know who the text is from and then read the body. If you want to reply, you can reply via written text or you can reply with audio and it will send the audio file. It is amazing to hear the text being read or have someone hear your voice when sending the audio file.

    Love this feature!!!
