You would think that the first Halloween wouldn’t be a huge ordeal for a child that’s just shy of two months old. Turns out, that’s not the case for our Fiona. About four months ago, before Fiona was born (and before we knew the gender of our forthcoming child), Amy sent me an email with an idea for a Halloween costume. It was gender neutral, and even long before Fiona had eliminated my ability to act tough, it was adorable.
Turns out that the costume – a chili pepper – is the perfect fit for our little Fiona. As you can see, she wears it well and is beyond cute.

The costume is also getting Amy and I interested in taking some amateur photography classes to capture some of these moments. Amy’s already practicing.
While we’re a ways from taking Fiona trick-or-treating and keeping in touch with the little one via cell phones and the FamilyMap service, we can still enjoy our time spent with family, showing off our new addition and her spicy personality.

And dad can work on removing the bad puns from his vocabulary.

Hey! Recently my family went to a theme park to celebrate Halloween. While waiting around my daughter showed a fun game she likes to play on her phone.

Every year my tweens love to get dressed up and go out to trick-or-treat! So every Halloween we discuss as a family the usual “STRANGER DANGER” safety tips. I go over and over with the kids not to go too far and not to leave my sight when we are all together in a pack. I make both the kids carry their cell phones, so if they needed to they can get a hold of me quickly. I also cover the basics like not eating any of the candy until I inspect it all. I always liked this part; this is when you can pick your favorites right out of their pumpkins! Tell them it’s, “bad,” and then eat it (wink wink!).
We all agree as neighbors that at least one of the adults will travel along with the kids since it’s not as safe to let kids walk the streets alone. We send them out with flashlights and glow sticks. Costumes we all know. Leaving parts of their faces showing makes it easier for others as well as yourself to recognize them.
Trick-or-treating isn’t what it used to be. Send a responsible adult or older teenager with them, and a cell phone. Here are some additional Halloween safety tips that I found to be helpful: http://www.halloween-safety.com/halloween_safety_kids.html
Enjoy and have a safe Halloween!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of America was having their annual chairman dinner the other night and I had the opportunity to attend with the AT&T team. It is so rewarding to hear how BGCA has impacted the lives of so many through various contributions and donations. I was particularly impressed by the use of cell phones and texting to raise additional funds during the dinner.
The moderator asked everyone to take out their cell phone and we all thought we were going to sing “Kum Bay Ya” with our cell phone face panels lit up; but instead on the big screen flashed a phone number with a request for anyone to text in a donation of any amount. Each table was challenged to represent the company they were sitting with. Through those efforts, I am sure several scholarships were funded and youths now have a place to go after school through our donations.
We’re always finding new ways to use technology, so why not text for charity? It makes perfect sense! Congratulations of the BGCA for all they do!

On September 4, 2009 I wrote about how Amy and I have been taking many more pictures than we ever have before. Since Fiona was born on 9/10/09, there’s been an even bigger spike in the number of pictures we take. In fact, my picture taking might be out of control.
Once things settled down a bit at home, I signed us up for a new Flickr Pro account. Since then, I’ve uploaded over 300 pictures for our friends and family to view. Many of them look like duplicates because I have an itchy shutter finger and can’t help myself when taking pictures of little Fiona, or mom and Fiona. Here are a few of my favorites:

Those 300 pictures only represent a fraction of the ones I’ve taken so far. The camcorder’s also getting some use and soon we’ll be investing in a much larger external hard drive to store all of the Fiona media we’re creating.
My family lives a few hours away. Our cameras and Flickr accounts help us keep them up to speed with Fiona’s growth in between visits. Being able to take photos with our phones and instantly upload them to our Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter accounts allows us to do this on the go.
Where do you store and share all of your family photos? Do you upload photos on the go?

Honestly, I think AT&T Navigator is one of the best products we offer our customers at AT&T. I use it all the time, but I had a recent incident that made me appreciate it even more.
My sister was having a dinner at her house to celebrate her only son’s 17th birthday. My teenagers arrived earlier and I arrived around 7:30 p.m. because I was panicked by a strange sound coming from my tires. After careful review of each tire, I saw a big piece of metal sticking out of the passenger front tire. The tire was not flat, but I was skeptical about removing it, which may release the air from the tire.
I asked my sister for the nearest shop that could assist and was told there were two in the area.
Off I went around 8 p.m. to find that both locations closed at 7 p.m. Stressed and frightened that my tire may burst at any time, I needed to locate a service center with little delay. I turned to AT&T Navigator for guidance. I searched by category and found Pep Boys and Wal-Mart in the immediate area. I selected Pep Boys because it was closer. Turn-by-turn the Navigator application told me where to go. I’m not sure what I would have done without it.
It was not life or death, but…you know what I mean.

As a parent I am amazed on how our children find new applications for their mobile devices. Stephanie recently blogged about her shopping tips, and I began to notice how my daughter and her friends are using their mobile devices for shopping as well.
My daughter, a high school junior, needed a new dress for homecoming dances she is planning to attend. She and her friends went shopping at the mall for new dresses, which is no different than when I was in high school (however I never bought a dress). What is different is they were taking pictures of themselves in the dresses and emailing the pictures to several of their friends for their opinions. I have noticed this new way to shop for homecoming dresses continued throughout the weekend as my daughter was receiving pictures of dresses from several of her friends. As an observer this was very entertaining.
I thought about this, and am impressed that our children find new ways to use their mobile devices in addition to talking and texting. This is the new way to shop in the 21st century.
