How cool is that? Seems like a really handy method for us old folks.

I probably would have learned something from watching this, had I not filmed it, hahaha.
Love you Mommy.

What a great idea! I thought I was the only one who couldn’t text fast on such a small keyboard!

Love it…even with a qwerty keyboard I don’t text very quickly, so I’ll start doing this now!

O.K. You’re a;ways after me to respond to these things — IF I text messaged — but I don’t — I’d find this helpful.
It seems to be a great idea when you’re close to a computer and you’re text messaged. But, how many people are that close to computers when they receive text messages? I really don’t have a clue!

Thats is very cool, we don’t have free texting on our cells but in the future when our contract is up we will look into that

Isn’t that a great idea. So much handier than squinting my eyes and trying to tap out something that makes sense. Had to be invented by a Mom!!!!

Cool tip. Wonder if I can do that with my cell provider. (Wait…am I not supposed to admit I don’t have AT&T?)
Next you need to get your girls to teach you (so you can teach us) the insider teen text lingo.

I’m not as old as some of you, but I am technologically slow. My phone has the old regular keypad so each numerical number has several letter options. It makes typing out a response to a text a pain! If I am home, how much easier to email it!
Thanks!

Becky,
Another great tip! I have the same question as Rachael. Will this work with other network providers? My kids are both living away from home. They like to text me after 11:30 at night even on weeknights! It startles me out of my sleep! But, at least they are thinking of me! Thank you, Becky!

Hey Jude – Don’t make it bad. Take a sad text – and make it better. Remember to find yourself a p.c., then you will see, how easy to text back.
Seriously – Unless I’m at the grocery store or driving or something,I’m almost always near a p.c. Home, work, church, a friend’s house – they’re all wired.

Sandra: I am so there with you. Any phone ringing or pinging late at night disturbs my beauty sleep, which we all know I need badly! I’m not sure about other providers’ capabilities. AT&T’s capabilities are spelled out here: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/messaging-internet/messaging/using-text-messaging.jsp I’d check those other providers’ sites for what they offer.

Here are the SMS email addresses for the most popular wireless carriers:
T-Mobile: 10digitnumber@tmomail.net
ATT: 10digitnumber@txt.att.net
Sprint: 10digitnumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Verizon: 10digitnumber@vtext.com
And for MMS (multimedia like pics, video, songs):
10digitnumber@mms.att.net
Not sure how to MMS for other carriers.

Hey Becky, I’m w/ you – I haven’t liked texting from my phone. However, I just got an iphone, so I hope I’ll like it better, and if not, I’ll use your tip for sure. Thanks!!

This is something I have done quite frequently while at work. Usually to answer a question my children pose to me during one of the many conference calls we attend throughout the day.
Another benefit is the response will come back to my email and not my phone.

Becky – thanks for showing us “ol’ timers” something new!
So my question is: How can the company (AT&T or others) make money on texting that is sent or received via email? I would assume the fees would apply to the cell phone only…..and not that I want my cell phone bill to go up, but it seems like there might be an opportunity for revenue (or maybe not – just mulling that over).

Great tip fat fingers! Chris/husband has been after me to start texting and I think this is a method whereby I can comply. I think us old folks are always near a computer. The nimble fingered set are the ones on the move.

Becky, I’ve used this way of texting my kids for a long time and try to tell other non-techy parents about it all the time. Thanks for the post! Also, since I don’t have a blackberry, but can receive text messages on my cell phone, I leave my text address on my “out-of-office assistant.”
