My Saturday started as it always does – with an unexpected request from my teenage son to take him somewhere. In this case, he wanted to go the gym before his 2:30 p.m. basketball game to practice his 3-point shot.
After spending an hour at gym, I had to get back to the house to ready my youngest son for his 11 a.m. basketball game. Following his game, we rushed back to the house to get my teenage son again to take him and other basketball team members to their game location.
While all of this was going on, I was monitoring my emails to stay on top of a system issue impacting our retail stores. This issue started at 7 a.m. and was resolved just before 2 p.m. This, of course, overlapped with my family time. Also at my son’s game earlier in the day, the Official told me that I should be paying attention and not texting. I was paying attention! The coach had called a timeout which allowed me to focus back on work for a minute; however his comments did provoke my thoughts.
Today’s wireless technology allows us to stay in touch, but is that always good? How do our divided actions impact our kids and what they perceive to be quality time spent with family?

Perhaps he should have been officiating instead of watching you?
