While on vacation last week, I went into panic mode after I left my 15 year old son at home for a short period of time and discovered my cell phone was dead. I felt so helpless. What if he needed me and I wasn’t available? It donned on me that wireless service, to an extent, provides peace of mind because I’m usually just a phone call away. Do you feel helpless without your phone?

21Look, Mom! No hands!
During the holiday season, I found myself on the road a lot and sitting in traffic like many of you. While at a light, I decided to count the number of people who were on their cell phones, with the phones glued to the side of their heads, and not using hands-free devices. At multiple lights, at least half of the people counted were guilty of this. I took another survey after the holidays and, at one point, seven of the 10 people on their phones weren’t using them hands-free.
For Christmas, I gave two of my kids Bluetooth devices. Now that they are licensed drivers, I think it’s important to help ensure that they are driving safely. In Georgia, using your cell phone without a hands-free device while driving is not against the law, but my question is should it be? What about your state?

20Phones can really do all that?
While making lunch plans with my friend the other day, she pulled out her phone and added our plans to her calendar. I asked what all she used her phone for, and her reply was, “You mean my ‘life’ phone?” She went on to say that she uses it to schedule her daily activities, and sends and receives alerts for meetings and birthdays. She keeps her shopping and “honey-do” lists on her phone. She also reads the news and pays bills online using her phone while waiting for the doctor or watching a TV show in the evening. She admitted to not having turned on her laptop in weeks. That makes me wonder if phones are replacing functions we typically do on our PCs. What do you think? Anyone use their phone more than their laptop?

16Are you on Twitter?
As I try different social networking sites, my most recent experiment has been with Twitter (you can find me here: http://twitter.com/brandyp). It’s a simple way to keep connected with others via the web or mobile phone. It’s an application I can access from my BlackBerry Bold so I’m able to continuously update my friends and family on what I’m doing, as much as I see fit throughout my day. During downtime, I can see what others are up to via their status updates, again all from the palm of my hand. No logging onto a computer which is great because sometimes I only have a few minutes between meetings, calls or waiting for Johnny’s practice to end. I don’t always have a computer with me or have the time to log into it. I also have it set to alert me on my BlackBerry Bold when certain members of my network change their updates. It’s been a great networking tool for me as I’ve been introduced to new people from all types of industries as well as SAHM (stay-at-home moms). If you’re looking for a simple networking application, I think Twitter does the job.
How are you using Twitter?

8Are you on Facebook?
I love the Facebook application I’m using on my BlackBerry Bold. It’s so easy to use and available at www.facebook.com/blackberry. I’m notified instantly when friends send a message or comment on my wall. If I receive a friend request, it comes to my phone, and I’m able to accept and increase my network.
I can also write on my friend’s wall, send a message, or check their status. I even update my own as often as I like. Since I enjoy sharing and receiving pictures, I love that I can take a picture from the phone and upload it to my page for all of my friends to see. It’s a fun way to keep me connected as well as add some simple and easy fun to my day. It’s so great! Anyone else have Facebook on their phone?

7My Dad and His Razor
At one point, you could find yellow Post-It notes hung in my 70-year old dad’s truck or bathroom reminding him of his “to-dos.” The notes reminding him of his activities and provided details such as where and what time he needed to be at what location. Although he’s retired, he lives a very active lifestyle and is a busy body.
Let me be the first to tell you that technology has changed his life for the better! He now organizes all of his activities using his phone and has all the numbers he needs at his fingertip. I say if a 70-year old can go from Post-Its to something as small and savvy as a Razor, we all can.
