At what age is it appropiate to give kids cellular phone? I do not feel comfortable with my 10 and 12 years olds having a cell phone.
I am definately a technology mom but i have many restrictions. I guess this can be limiting but I feel saftey is most important. I don’t want my kids texting in class or church. I do have a cell myself but All i do is answer and call out. Definately a waste. Any advice?

You are definately on the right track sharing technology uses with other working moms. Just think, Barack Obama emailed his supporters throughout his campaign and the networking worked in his favor.

Cell phones are an invaluable communication tool, but maybe when kids are in their teens, its time to give them one, but limit the use to emergency situations only for calling. I suggest if you give a teenage a cellphone, get an unlimited txting plan
and just set rules for them and if they break them, take away the phone.

In response to the question from Michelle on what age is appropriate to give kids a cell phone, it depends on your situation. I gave both my kids a cell phone at age 11. I am a working mom who needed to keep track of them. I couldn’t make it without texting. There are plenty of situations where I need to be able to keep in touch with my two kids without the phone ringing. Their after school activities vary and I want to know where they are at all times.
Now that AT&T has parental controls (go check out this cool way to restrict your children’s usage, time of day and amounts, without restricting your access to them
), I would give them a phone at whatever point they are responsible enough to take care of it. I see lots of kids with phones at 9 or 10 now. Once you give them a phone, you’re going to wonder how you made it without it!!!

My oldest daughter really wants a cell phone. When I asked her WHY she wanted a cell phone, she said so she could text her friends. Why can’t she just email her friends? Do they make a device (besides the old pagers) that would allow my daughter to text only?
